The catalyst support for butterfly‑shaped catalysts is an irregularly shaped alumina carrier. Compared with conventional spherical or cylindrical supports, the “leaf‑like” structure of the butterfly or four‑leaf‑clover shape provides a larger external surface area within the same volume. Irregular particles, when packed, create higher porosity, allowing fluids to flow more readily and thereby significantly reducing bed pressure drop—this is one of its most prominent industrial advantages. For example, in the hydroprocessing of distillate oils, studies have shown that catalysts supported on four‑leaf‑clover‑shaped carriers exhibit exceptionally high activity in hydrodenitrogenation reactions. In the field of diesel hydrotreating for desulfurization and dearomatization, industrially applied butterfly‑shaped catalysts have also been demonstrated to possess high catalytic activity.
